Variety shows are very successful in connecting idols to a younger audience and by doing so expanding their fanbase; each show has a particular concept and its own ways of involving the fan community in the less publicized spheres of the idols’ life. Some shows are specifically designed by KPOP companies to reveal invisibilized parts of an idol’s life and work and give fans an insider’s perspective on such predominant aspects of the idol’s persona.

Most "reality shows" are filmed with minimal technical means, giving authorship to the idols as they manipulate small hand-held cameras. These eye-like devices allow them to direct the fans' gaze as well as to transform the audience into active participants in their daily lives by linking the idols’ physical bodies to those of the digital fans. The smallness of the frame is still imaginative enough to let fans embody their idols’ movements or have a vague sense of space.

On the other hand, shows that have more technical means and multiple high-end cameras allow for a better understanding of the environment as the addition of more points of view brings substance to the reality of idols and create a more spatialized experience.

In both situations, the very familiar way in which the idol addresses the camera, as if they were making eye contact with their fans, adds tangible physicality to the virtual content as fans believe they can reciprocate this gesture. Thus, the fans are not only brought to inhabit the most personal domains of the life of their idols, but they are also brought to life in the world of their idol by the camera.
